1
  • Put the patient in a comfortable position with the upper part of the body slightly raised
  • Swab an area of the abdominal wall below the navel line
  • Prepare the area for injection according to local guidelines
2
  • Examine the foil pouch and syringe for damage
3
  • Remove the syringe and check that at least part of the ZOLADEX depot is visible
  • As ZOLADEX is not a liquid injection do not try and remove air bubbles as this may displace the depot
4
  • Pull the plastic safety tab away from the syringe and discard
  • Remove needle cover
5
  • Hold the syringe around the barrel
  • Pinch the abdominal skin and insert the point at an angle of 30 to 45 degrees to the skin with the needle opening facing upwards
  • Continue to insert into subcutaneous tissue until the protective shield touches the patient skin
6
  • To administer the ZOLADEX depot, depress the plunger until you can depress it no further. This will activate the protective shield. You may hear a 'click' and will feel the protective shield automatically begin to slide to cover the needle
  • If the plunger is not FULLY depressed, the protective shield will NOT activate
7
  • Withdraw the needle and allow the protective shield to slide and cover the needle
8
  • Dispose of the syringe in an approved sharps collector
